Originally from the north of England, and having grown up only about 100 yards from the sea in the North-East, Martyn still loves being by the sea. He studied French and German at London University, and spent two years as a volunteer English teacher in Madagascar. His career was in overseas aid, based mainly on the impact of overseas aid activities, in close partnership with the British Government, the European Commission, the World Bank and the UN.
On retirement in Westgate on Sea, he was a councillor 2015-2021 in the newly-formed town council, chairing it for two years 2018-2020. He now lives with his wife and mother-in-law here in Sandwich.
As Chair of Westgate on Sea Town Council he was involved in all its activities, and set up a Business Forum which proved enormously supportive of the local shops and businesses through the COVID epidemic. He also chairs the Board of MiCommunity, an organisation which started as a food bank but now runs a shop in Margate selling cut-price donated food to needy people, including Ukrainian refugees, as well as offering advice and help on housing and cost-of-living problems.
In the 2019 General Election he was the candidate for the Liberal Democrats for South Thanet.
In Sandwich he is a member of the URC and Café Church run by The Carpenter’s Arms each month at Age Concern, and plans to join the twinning arrangements and French/German-speaking events, and anything musical.
