I was born in a small Gloucestershire village and attended local schools. I was the 1,753,464th baby born in the NHS.
I was the first child in my small local Primary School to pass the 11-plus since the Second World War. Thanks to the 1944 Education Act, I completed an Honours degree-course at Liverpool University on a full grant.
I then lived in that city for 16 years working in a variety of jobs, notably as a Hackney Cab driver for three and a half years before joining the Probation Service.
I married in 1984 and we have an adult daughter living near Ash.
I worked in the Probation Service for 30 years, first in Liverpool and Birkenhead, then moving to West Mercia where my favourite posts were in HMP Shrewsbury and in a Drug Rehabilitation Unit.
We moved to Kent in 2004. My wife has close relatives living locally and we enjoy the ease of access to the European mainland.
I worked for the Kent Probation Service in Margate , Folkestone and Maidstone Prison but took redundancy and early retirement in 2008, though I then took a number of short-term contracts in Maidstone Prison again.
Since retirement, I have been able to enjoy my hobbies of gardening, walking and wildlife photography.
